Women’s Health: Genital Prolapse

What is Genital Prolapse

Genital prolapse refers to the protrusion of pelvic organs into the vagina. The position of pelvic organs, such as the uterus, vagina, bladder, and rectum, is supported by muscles and fibrous connective tissue. Various factors, including chronic constipation, frequent or prolonged squatting, heavy lifting, and the impact of pregnancy and childbirth, can weaken the strength of this supportive tissue.

What Causes Genital Prolapse

Genetic factors also play a role in determining the resilience of this connective tissue, leading to differences in susceptibility among women. As these supportive structures weaken over time, the pelvic organs may begin to bulge into the vagina. Initially, these bulges may only be noticeable during a medical examination, but eventually, you may observe them protruding through the vaginal opening. While this can be distressing, it is not considered dangerous or an emergency. Additionally, you might experience a weak urine stream and difficulties with bowel movements due to the distortion caused by the bulging.

Treatment for Genital Prolapse

Many women endure symptoms of genital prolapse for long periods without seeking treatment, finding ways to manage challenges related to bladder and bowel emptying. However, there are both surgical and non-surgical options available to alleviate or resolve this issue. It is important to openly discuss any symptoms indicating this condition with your healthcare provider.
