What is Swimmer’s Ear?

If you’ve ever spent the day at a pool or lake and come home with an annoying itch or pain in your ear, you may be familiar with the condition called swimmer’s ear. But what is swimmer’s ear? Let’s dive in.

Swimmer’s Ear: Causes and Symptoms

Swimmer’s ear is an infection of the ear. It occurs when water becomes trapped in the outer part of your ear canal, creating a perfect environment for bacteria to grow. It’s different from an inner ear infection (the kind kids often get with a cold), but it can still make you feel miserable.

What Does Swimmer’s Ear Feel Like?

The first signs of swimmer’s ear are usually itching and discomfort. It may feel like your ear is full or blocked, and the sensation may worsen when you tug on your earlobe or press around your ear. Some people may also notice clear fluid or minor swelling. If left untreated, swimmer’s ear can get painful in a short amount of time. That’s why it’s a good idea to have it checked out sooner rather than later.

Who Gets Swimmer’s Ear?

As its name implies, swimmer’s ear most often affects people who spend a lot of time in the water. It’s especially common in kids and teens, but anyone can get swimmer’s ear, also known as otitis externa. A relaxing soak in the tub or even time spent outside in humid weather can cause swimmer’s ear. Using earbuds or cotton swabs in your ears can also increase your chances.

How is Swimmer’s Ear Treated?

Swimmer’s ear is easily treated. At Xpress Wellness Urgent Care, we can take a look, relieve discomfort, and get you back to feeling better. Ear drops that help dry out the infection and calm irritation are the most common course of treatment.

Can Swimmer’s Ear Be Prevented?

You can help prevent swimmer’s ear by gently tipping your head to each side after swimming or showering to allow water to drain out. Avoid sticking anything into your ears (even cotton swabs) to dry them. Sanitize earbuds, earplugs, or anything else that enters your ear regularly, and avoid over-cleaning your ears themselves.

When to Head to Xpress Wellness Urgent Care
