How Long is Strep Throat Contagious

Comparte este post:

If you or your child has ever had strep throat, you know how miserable it can be — sore throat, fever, and just feeling downright awful. But in addition to wondering how long you’ll feel this bad, there’s another big question: How long is strep contagious? Whether you’re trying to spare the rest of your family from the discomfort of strep, or wondering when it’s safe to go back to work or school, here’s what you need to know.

When Can You Spread Strep Throat?

Faringitis estreptocócica is caused by bacteria, and is spread through sneezing, coughing, and sharing drinks or eating utensils. It’s most common during the late fall, winter, and early spring, but can occur at any time of the year. Strep is especially common in daycares, schools, and workplaces. Children and teens are most likely to get strep throat, but it can occur in adults — especially parents caring for sick children.

If you have strep throat and don’t get treatment, you can be contagious for up to two to three weeks. But there’s good news — if you start antibiotics, you’re usually no longer contagious after 24 hours. And, most patients start feeling markedly better within a day or two of starting their antibiotic treatment.

Signs You Might Have Strep

Not every sore throat is caused by strep, but common signs include:

  • A sudden, really painful sore throat
  • Fiebre
  • Swollen glands in your neck
  • White or red spots on your tonsils, roof of the mouth, or back of the throat
  • Nausea or vomiting (especially in younger children)

If left untreated, strep throat can cause serious complications like scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, or abscesses. So, if you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, it’s best to head to an Xpress Wellness Urgent Care to be tested.
