Maintain Healthy Blood Pressure With Xpress Wellness

Making sure that you maintain blood pressure that falls within a normal, healthy range is a routine component to health services provided by Xpress Wellness. Our doctors can provide simple, accurate tests and determine the proper course of action for your health. Here is what you can expect when you schedule an appointment for blood pressure management at one of our Oklahoma locations.

Blood Pressure Test

A blood pressure test determines the amount of pressure that is placed on your arteries when your heart pumps blood throughout your body. The result of this test will help your doctor know if you suffer from high blood pressure (called hypertension), low blood pressure (called hypotension), or if your blood pressure falls within a normal range for your body type. You should consider scheduling annual blood pressure screenings once you reach adulthood. Regular blood pressure tests help detect heart disease issues and reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes. If you have a history of high blood pressure in your family, you must make blood pressure screening a regular part of your medical check-up routine. Here is what you can typically expect during a blood pressure test:

  • You will be seated, and have an arm supported at heart level.
  • An inflatable cuff will be placed around your arm, which is attached to a readout dial. This apparatus is called a sphygmomanometer.
  • This cuff is inflated then slowly deflated while your doctor monitors your pulse and the readout on the sphygmomanometer.

Systolic & Diastolic Pressure

Blood pressure is measured by a unit called millimeters of mercury. These numbers are represented in your blood pressure results as “number over number,” which refers to the systolic and diastolic pressure in your arteries, respectively.

  • Systolic Pressure: The top number in your blood pressure results, which indicates the pressure of blood flow when your heart contracts while pumping blood.
  • Diastolic Pressure: The bottom number in your blood pressure results, which indicates the pressure of your blood between heartbeats.

Normal blood pressure results are typically around less than 120 systolic pressure over less than 80 diastolic pressure. Your doctor will refer to this normal range as “120 over 80.” This is a general range and can vary from person to person. Your doctor at Xpress Wellness can help you determine your healthy range depending on age, weight, and other factors. Readings that are less than 90 over 60 indicate hypotension or low blood pressure, and readings over 120 over 80 indicated elevated blood pressure or hypertension.
